Also known as bream or grunter, black perch is a name for the silver perch, a freshwater fish found throughout the Murray-Darling river system. It is happiest in fast running water, particularly in rapids. Fresh, this is a good fish to eat.
A name for black sapote. The fruit of a tall, handsome tree with black bark, native to Mexico and the forested lowlands of Central America and was carried to many parts of the world by the Spaniards. On the tree, the fruit is shiny bright green, ripening to a muddy green. The swet-flavoured flesh is glossy, very dark brown and jelly-like, surrounding anything from none to ten flat smooth seeds.
A variety of chilli, like a crumpled plum in shape, and ripening from a deep green to deep red.
An indeterminate, Russian heirloom variety of tomato that grows vigorously outside and fruits in mid season. It produces 5-7.5 cm (2-3 inch) plum-shaped fruits which are reddish mahogany in colour with deep green shoulders. They have excellent flavour and are good for sauces. The hotter the weather the darker the skin.
The white pomphret is slightly more of a delicacy than black or brown pomphret. The flesh falls away from the bones for easy eating.
The black poplar mushroom.is good in risotti or sauces. (If gathering mushrooms you must be absolutely certain what you have before you eat them as many are very poisonous.)
Blackfish. A lean fish found in the Pacific with many tiny fine bones and a delicate flavour. Much used in Chinese cooking.
Black is a type of potato which is dark purple rather than black after cooking.
